It's not particularly surprising that Yorgos Lanthimos has given us a fearless film with his latest, Poor Things. Fearless filmmaking is, after all, exactly what Lanthimoes does. Love him or hate him, Lanthimos amplifies the world of cinema and expands universe of what it can accomplish.

He has, perhaps, never done it better than he does with the extraordinary Poor Things.

The film starts in the home of one Godwin Baxter (Willlem Dafoe), a mad scientist of sorts in this gender-reversed Frankenstein story with a feminist core and even a bit of a celebratory Rocky Horror vibe.

How Baxter creates Bella is dark and inspired and best left to be experienced rather than described her.
