Movie Review: Hey, Missy!
| |
Missy (Alison O'Leary) is disarmingly cute. With an innocent smile and a gleam in her eyes, she's the kind of gal you spot across the room who immediately draws you and, well, never lets you go.
Hey, Missy! is a terrific little indie horror short from writer/director Joe Taft, a 15-minute dazzler that had a nice run on the indie fest circuit and is now available for checking out on Crypt TV. As Missy, Alison O' Leary is a twisted charmer with a pretty unique kink - she lures them and in that moment of sexual bliss brutally murders them.
Hey, Missy! is an absolute blast, a whole lotta brutal mixed in with a bit of pitch-black humor and a seductive spirit that simmers and swaggers. O'Leary is truly tremendous here, her hint of vulnerability just enough to draw you in until it's too late and her unique brand of kink a tapestry of compulsion and maybe a whole lot more.
Confidently directed by Taft to create a realistic sense of horror that feels both squirm-inducing and a little familiar, Hey, Missy! leaves its slash mark of sensuality in its quick 15-minute running time further amplified by D.P. ALex Fanikos's intimate, in-your-face lensing and an absolutely spot-on score from Gary Taft. Truthfully, this entire ensemble is strong and the production team is clearly tapped into Taft's vision for the film.
Filmed almost entirely in North Easton, Massachusetts on a $4,000 budget over the course of 10 days, Hey, Missy! is a fun little horror short that you'll definitely want to check out. It's also the kind of film that will have me watching out for O'Leary's work moving forward.
