 Movie Review: Sin Salida

I can't say that it's often that a Paraguayan short film crosses my desk, however, I'm sure glad that writer/director Carlos Mendoza thought of me when looking to spread the word about his 16-minute short film Sin Salida. While I can't say it's a storyline I haven't seen before, Mendoza has crafted a suspenseful, engaging short film centered around six friends gathered to celebrate a birthday in an isolated cabin far from the city.

We quickly pick up a tension in the air, a broken up coupling and a few uncertainties. What begins as a night amongst friends filled with laughter, alcohol, and maybe other substances turns into something else darker and chilling.

Sin Salida is, indeed, a darker and creepier film. As events taken an unexpected turn and reality becomes increasingly unrealistic, the real question becomes is whether or not what this group of young adults is experiencing is real or just a figment of their drug-fueled imagination.

Sin Salida has a talented ensemble bringing Mendoza's story to life. While it's always hard to push anyone to the front in an obvious ensemble film, Laura Rodas as Sofia particularly captivated me, and yet this entire ensemble is quite gifted.

Lensing by Lillian Ferreira is impactful throughout, vividly capturing the growing turn of events.

Mendoza takes a familiar set-up and puts some unique twists into the storytelling. Sin Salida is early in its festival journey internationally. It should have no problem finding its way whether that be the microcinema fest circuit or the myriad of indie horror/thriller fests. If you get a chance, check it out.
