Movie Review: The Solution
| |
There are a myriad of ways in which Andrew J. Bullard IV's The Solution could have become an entirely different film. It's refreshing to have that not happen. Instead, Bullard trusts the power of his storytelling and the film's gentle yet undeniable leaning into family and faith to tell a meaningful story that may be a bit familiar but gives us characters we appreciate and messages with which we can all resonate.
In the film, Allen (Bullard) returns home to help his father, Oscar (Derrick Dee Drake), recover from a stroke. Of course, returning home is never quite that simple and this is a journey that involves mending a strained relationship while also help revive the family's dry cleaning business.
I was constantly surprised by just how gentle this film is, though that doesn't mean that Bullard doesn't dive right on in to the familial tensions that can develop over the years. However, this is written to be an inspiring and uplifting drama centered around the possibility of reconciliation, the oft-necessity of forgiveness, and the theological wonder known as grace. The answers here are both simple and complex. Sometimes, the most obvious solutions are that way.
Bullard has a gift for storytelling. This story weaves together a tapestry of honest human interactions with ample amounts of both comedy and drama, both feeling naturally derived and borne out of genuine relationships. This ensemble cast performs quite ably. Could I tell this is a low-budget indie? Of course. However, between Bullard's storytelling and this talented ensemble I didn't so much worry about budget as I did following these compelling characters.
The Solution picked up a few awards on the faith-based and microcinema fest circuits, well-deserved recognition for this family-friendly drama that is relatable and quite entertaining. Both Bullard and Drake, in particular give impressive performances with lensing by Ben Walters and Nathan Walters serving as essential for the film along with the original score by Berto Garcia and Joshua C. Jackson.
