Movie Review: Maybe Forever
| |
Maybe Forever isn't a film for everyone. It's not the kind of film you'll often find at a multiplex, partly owing to its slow and gentle pace and partly owing to its positive, life-affirming portrayal of Latinos devoid of the usual stereotypes.
Picked up by Indie Rights (of course, because Indie Rights has quietly become one of the most dependable indie distributors for quality, hard to market motion pictures), Maybe Forever tells the story of Sofia (Ruby Capacete) and Greg (George Capacete). I suppose "tells the story" is a bit overstated. Maybe Forever is more about a moment or a series of moments between two people on a date wo decide to be fully present with one another and to cherish each moment.
There really is nothing else here. There are no faux conflicts or emotional manipulations. There are no distracting storylines. There's no trumped up dramas or silliness. Indeed, Maybe Forever is an intentionally romantic drama that surrenders to that romance and an intimacy that is uncommon in contemporary cinema.
The film, which the Capacetes also write and direct, comes out of a desire to change the way Latinos are viewed in the media. A LatinX team of Mexican descent, the Capacetes have a goal of telling meaningful, universal stories about the human condition.
Again, while Maybe Forever won't be a film for everyone for those who embrace its unique rhythms it will prove to be a rewarding view. It's a date night film, a film of tremendous tenderness and presence with an honest, comfortable chemistry between our two leads that allows us to follow them for the film's 71-minute running time even as very little unfolds other than a quiet, growing togetherness that becomes more believable as time unfolds.
After a couple other short film collaborations, Maybe Forever is the first feature-length collaboration for this talented husband-and-wife team and it will be a pleasure to watch their talent grow as they continue.
